Thursday Movie: Once Bitten

Posted: under Thursday Movie.

First off, I saw this movie at the old Phipps Plaza movie theater with my first girlfriend at Emory. Hence: I’m old…

Secondly, you just know from this description (courtesy IMDB, of course), everything you need to know about Once Bitten:

The Countess has a problem. She is a 400 year old vampire who will cease to look young unless she is able to feed on a virgin three times before Halloween, a week away…Finding a virgin is difficult in Los Angeles.

Almost makes that whole Bella and the werewolf/sparkling vampire love triangle come off as Shakespeare, no?

But, the movie really is all about one person. Jim Carrey. Unless you count Finders Keepers (and no one actually does for the most part any more than the Canadian ‘movies’ with such luminaries as Alan Thicke) Once Bitten is the first major American motion picture starring Carrey. And he carried the movie. Sure, he had help from an extraordinarily interesting cast (Lauren Hutton! Cleavon Little! Karen Kopins…) and that oh-so-mid-80s feel to the whole thing (just check out the clothes) but it was his movie and he was wonderful and very worth watching.

As for Karen Kopins:

There is just something really wonderful about the list of television shows she appeared on in the years before and after starring opposite Jim Carrey in Once Bitten:

  • The Fall Guy
  • Riptide
  • TJ Hooker
  • Knight Rider
  • The Love Boat
  • Amazing Stories
  • Scarecrow And Mrs. King
  • The A-Team
  • Dallas
Is that a lineup of absolute 80s cheesy television dramas or what?! She appears to now be happily married raising her children with very little web presence and I wish her all the best!
